H1N1 Influenza Hotline: 1-800-830-9426 |
Swine
influenza virus (referred to as SIV)
refers to influenza cases that are caused by
Orthomyxoviruses endemic to pig populations.
Swine flu infects people every year and is
found typically in people who have been in
contact with pigs, although there have been
cases of person-to-person transmission.
There
is no research that can predict who is at
risk
and who is not. What the history of previous
Influenza pandemics has indicated is that
patients who had the greatest mortality were
those whose immune system over-reacted
after the initial Influenza virus infection.
Signs and Symptoms
Following are the signs and symptoms
most commonly associated with SIV:
•
Symptoms are similar to
those of regular
human flu and include fever, cough,
shortness of breath, sore throat,
disorientation, chills and fatigue
Some people have also reported:
•
Stiffness of the
joints, diarrhea and vomiting
In children emergency warning signs
requiring urgent medical attention include:
•
Fast breathing or
trouble breathing |
|
•
Bluish skin
color
•
Lack of thirst
resulting in not drinking
enough fluids
•
Being so irritable that
the child does not
want to be held
•
Flu-like symptoms
improve but then return
with fever and a worse cough
•
Fever with a rash
In adults, emergency warning signs
requiring urgent medical attention include:
•
Difficulty breathing or
shortness of breath
•
Sudden dizziness or
confusion
• Severe
or persistent vomiting
How does SIV spread?
•
Spread of SIV happens
mainly from
person-to-person in the same way that
seasonal flu spreads, i.e., through coughing
or sneezing of people with influenza.
Sometimes people may become infected by
touching something with flu viruses on it
and then touching their mouth or nose.
• Infected
people may be able to infect others
beginning one day before symptoms
develop and up to seven or more days after
becoming sick.

The healthier you are, the better your
system can fight!
•
Eat whole, real food, get plenty of sleep
and exercise, drink plenty of pure water,
and take a
multi-vitamin daily.
• Phyto-nutrients provide important
antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune
supporting
compounds. Some good sources are
blueberries, mangosteen, pomegranate, acai
berry, alfalfa,
chlorella, and most of the richly colored
fruits and vegetables.
Here are some supplements to strengthen your
immune system.
o Vitamin C – your dose will depend
on your overall health and other supplements
you are
taking. A rule of thumb is between 2,000 and
5,000 mg. Stay within bowel tolerance as
Vitamin C
can cause diarrhea. If you get loose stools,
drop the dose. Many people think loose
stools are just
a nuisance and continue high doses.
Actually, you can lose a lot of water and
become dehydrated
causing additional health issues. It also
limits your ability to flush toxins and
viral components from
your system.
o Astragalus: Astrgalus is a great
immune booster and also an adaptogen,
meaning it helps
the body adapt to stress. In this case, it
helps your body adjust its immune response
to be the
most effective it can be against this virus.
There are no side effects or drug
interactions and this is
considered a very safe herb. Buy it
standardized at 500mg and take 2 pills three
times a day or
three pills twice a day.
o Reishi and Cordycep Mushrooms: This
combination of mushrooms is extremely
effective
in combating many illnesses and diseases.
They are more effective used together than
either is
alone. In this instance they are included
because of their adaptogen and anti-viral
properties. They
are considered extremely safe but rare side
effects have been reported and include
dizziness, dry
mouth, stomach upset, nose bleed,
gastrointestinal distress and skin rash. If
any of these occur
stop taking the mushrooms. There are no
known drug interactions. The dose is 1,000
mg a day for
prevention.
o Garlic Concentrate: Garlic is a
great antimicrobial, including antiviral.
You can eat garlic
bulbs but its hard on the stomach and
breath. A better alternative are garlic
concentrates. The best
concentrate I know of is a product sold by
Designs for health called Allicillin.
Possible side effects
include stomach upset, heartburn and rash.
Garlic is a blood thinner and can interact
with blood
thinning medications such as Warfarin or
Coumadin. Be sure to check with your doctor
before
using large quantities. There is no
established dose so go by the
recommendations on the product
you buy.
