Bio-identical hormones have exactly the
same chemical structure as the hormones produced by the
human body. The term "Bio-identical" is generally used
for preparations containing sex hormones such as
estradiol, estrone, estriol, progesterone and
testosterone. They are based on derivatives from plants
such as wild yam and the soybean plant. The wild yam
contains chemical precursor molecules that can be
altered in the lab into estrogens and other hormones
whose molecular structure is the same as is produced
naturally in the human body. Biologically identical
hormones mimic the the hormones the body produces on
it's own, and are believed to produce the same
physiological responses.
The advantages of bio-identical hormones are as
follows:
◊ Offers the same molecular
structure as our body produces.
◊ Topical application vs. oral,
thereby reducing unnecessary side effects such as blood
clotting.
◊ Hormone levels and combinations
are customized to each patients needs.
◊ Combined with other bio-identicals
to offer better protection against hormone dependent cancers.
Application of hormones directly to the skin is regarded
as the safest route followed by pellet, sublingual,
capsule and lastly orally. The prevailing concept is
that bio-identical hormones may be safer to use than
synthetic hormones because their molecular structure
duplicates hormones found naturally in the human body.
Bio-Indentical Hormones in
Menopause?
Many Integrative and Naturopathic
Physicians recommend bio-identical hormones to improve
the quality of life for females suffering from the
physical, mental, and emotional symptoms related to
menopause. Symptoms may include hot flashes, night
sweats, weight gain, headaches, pain with intercourse,
fatigue, recurrent bladder infections, depression,
irritability, anxiety, and insomnia. In conjunction with
other modalities such as herbal medicine, acupuncture,
nutritional intervention, exercise, physical medicine,
therapeutic massage and relaxation techniques,
bio-identical hormones can restore a feeling of
wellbeing.
Concerns over the use of hormones
as per the WHI (Womans Health Initiative) study 2002?
The Woman's Health Initiative Study began in 1991 which
was a study that investigated Premarin and Prempro which
are both animal derived hormone replacement therapies.
It was a 15 year research study to address the most
common causes of mortality and morbidity. The study was
discontinues after five years instead of the planned
eight years because Prempro was shown to cause a higher
risk of heart attack, stroke, emboli, and breast cancer.
Prempro is a synthetic estrogen collected from pregnant
mare urine and processed in a laboratory. The processing
of the hormone in a laboratory is not the major concern
as bio-identical hormones are processed in this manner
as well. The problem is the type of hormone produced is
marked by the mares liver as a waste product and is then
administered to women. The inherent problem with giving
this hormone to women is the liver recognizes this type
of estrogen as a waste hormone and can produce an
unfavorable ratio of 2OH/16OH estrone in the human body.
Otherwise know as the good to bad ratio! When the ratio
is unfavorable women can have greater incidence in
potentially harmful side effects from this type of
medication.
